Worship In The Lake District
The church with worshippers in it on a Spring Sunday morning. The choir is leading the singing. On a sunny day the interior of the chapel is very bright and airy.
The pulpit is set high-up so that the preacher could project his voice to the congregation sat in the gallery. There was no electricity in the building initially, and obviously no microphones! The chapel was designed to seat four hundred worshippers.
The beautiful curved pews in the gallery. The workmanship to create these was considerable, and would have involved steaming the timbers to make them curve into the required shape. Nowadays the gallery pews only get sat in when there are concerts in the church.
The building was completed in 1898, and was known as Zion Chapel. It was designed to sit over four hundred worshippers, and was needed as the previous chapel, in the next door yard, had become too small for the growing congregation. The chapel joined the Congregational Union in 1910, and subsequently decided to join the newly created United Reformed Church in 1972. It is still referred to locally as "Zion".
